Target aggression for greater growth

Studies of pig behavior are usually justified in terms of helping to formulate a better under-standing of welfare needs. But they are also suggesting ways in which the daily rate of weight gain might be improved during the growing and finishing period. As one possibility, it has become proposed that better growth rates could be obtained by enriching the environment for the pigs in the finishing house. Such enrichment would prob-ably involve a greater segregation of the dif-ferent areas in the pen according to their use for resting, feeding, drinking, dunging, and so-cial activity.
