An increasingly bitter trans-Atlantic trade dispute over bananas is nearing key deadlines, with a senior European trade official arriving in Washington early December to confer with top US officials over the issue. Rolf Moehler, the European Union'sdeputy director general for agriculture, met last December with the US Trade Representative Mickey Kantor to discuss Washington's charge that the EU's banana import policy favors Caribbean banana growers and discriminates against bananas grown by US producers. Moehler's visit will be a few weeks ahead of early January (nextyear), deadline by which Washington under international trading rules and barms US economic interests.
