The French city of Nancy has decided how to replace its now-unique Bombardier TVR guided bi-mode trolleybuses. The city had originally planned to replace the guided trolleybuses with a tram system, but post-Covid, can no longer afford this. It has now decided to revert to conventional trolleybuses, previously used in the city between 1982-99, and an order has been placed with Swiss manufacturer Hess. It will receive 25 double-articulated LighTram 25 trolleybuses, the model number indicating the approximate length in metres. The cost of the project at €50m is said to be one-tenth of the alternative of conversion to tram operation. The decision to go with trolleybuses enables some of the infrastructure for the Bombardier TVR system to be re-used. TVR, also described as 'trams on tyres,' was originally planned to be withdrawn at the end of 2021, but will now continue in operation until 2023. However, there will be about a year's gap before the Hess vehicles can enter service, pending reconstruction of the route. This will include the removal of the TVR single rail guidance system in the middle of the road, which is only present on parts of the route. Elsewhere, they are steered conventionally by the driver. In this mode, the double-flanged guidewheels have to be lifted clear of the road surface when not on the rail.
