Source/description: Recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) is characterized by coughing and increased breathing effort owing to airway hyper-reactivity and mucus accumulation in the airways. The average age of onset in RAO-affected horses is 9– 12 years. Both genders are equally affected, and the estimated prevalence of RAO among Warmblood horses in Switzerland is approximately 10%. 1 Recurrent airway obstruction is a complex disorder caused by interactions of multiple genes, each contributing to only a small effect, and there are also equally important gene–environment interactions. 1 Previous studies suggest a linkage of RAO with chromosomal regions on ECA 13 or 15 respectively.
