Economic development execs at SAE's Southern Automotive Manufacturing Conference tell what it really takes to land that big auto nameplate. This past summer, SAE held its first major event in the southeast corridor of the United States, the Southern Automotive Manufacturing Conference & Exposition (SAMC). It was established in response to customer needs for timely and relevant continuing education for automotive professionals in states such as Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and South Carolina where major auto activities are taking place. SAMC drew 1000 attendees and 70 exhibitors to Nashville, TN. It received strong support from industry and academia, attracting high-level executive participation from not less than five major U.S.-based OEMs and the governor of Tennessee—a first for an SAE inaugural event.
