The thermal barrier core insert (insert) is inserted during the manufacturing process of an engine cylinder block, displacing high conductivity parent material (typically cast aluminum) and replacing with the core material, a tow conductivity material or lost core which is replaced by air.The purpose of the insert is to more accurately control the heat conduction path between liner and cooling jacket, allowing regions of higher temperature where desired for fuel economy, and tower temperature where desired for durability. The insert can be made of any material with tower thermal conductivity than the parent material, including but not limited to steel alloys, sand, or air (as in a lost-core design). The insert can be designed with geometric features allowing the parent material to form a heat conduction path where the core insert is not located, including features such as holes or slots as shown in the figure below. Other voids in the insert or material additions to the are also possible more complex three-dimensional heat transfer control.
