While Toyota has invested heavily in hybrid-electric vehicles- in terms of research and development as well as public opinion- the company recognizes that the foundation of a successful hybrid remains the internal combustion engine on which it is based. "It is surprising how much refinement is still to be found in the good old internal combustion engine," said Paul Williamsen, Product Education Manager for the University of Toyota. The company introduced much of its latest thinking in ' the GR series of all-aluminum, DOHC, 24-valve, VVT-i, 245-hp (183-kW), 3.5-L V6 engines that debuted in the 4Runner, and passenger-car variants of that engine will arrive in the near future, he said.
