In the lucrative and ultra-competitive mid-size family sedan market segment, customers think a lot about safety. With that in mind, Ford figured it made sense to design and build a car that "thinks" a lot about safety.The brainchild of all this thinking is the 2000 Taurus, and its gray matter is the Restraints Control Module (RCM), which upon impact considers three critical parameters: how the occupant is seated, whether he/she is wearing a seatbelt, and how severe the impact is. Within milliseconds of gathering information on these parameters from an array of crash sensors, the RCM decides what, if anything, to tell the restraint devices. If the sensors tell the RCM that the crash is severe, it will tell thepretensioner and one or more airbags to deploy. Moreover, it will instruct the airbag to deploy at a force level commensurate with impact force.
