Engine downsizing, a major decade-long trend in Europe, may be reaching its limit with diesel engines due to their comparatively lower CO_2 emissions and to downsizing's resultant higher specific load and increased NOx emissions. The need to control NOx emissions is crucial for tightened Euro 6 emissions regulations coming in 2014. However, downsizing is still having a major impact on gasoline engines and on the demand for technologies supporting the trend such as turbochargers and variable valvetrains, according to new analysis from a Frost & Sullivan.
