Shortly before midnight on Friday, November 5, 2021, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal (Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act), sending the bill to President Biden for his signature. The bill addresses several issues important to EEI and our member companies. Among them, the bill: 1. Provides billions of dollars in grants for electric transportation infrastructure and establishes a new clean school bus program. 2. Establishes grant programs to support activities that reduce the likelihood and consequences of impacts to the energy grid due to extreme weather, wildfires, and other natural disasters. 3. Authorizes increased funding for the smart grid investment matching grant program. 4. Contains significant provisions to promote and to advance the physical security and cybersecu-rity of electric companies. 5. Includes important research, development, demonstration, and deployment provisions on hydrogen and carbon capture, utilization, storage, and transportation. 6. Provides billions of dollars to help reduce wildfire risks. 7. Ensures every American has access to reliable high-speed internet, establishing a $l-billion grant program to expand and extend middle-mile infrastructure.
