Changing performance criteria and evolving digital technologies contribute to the transformation of design mechanisms and question the logic of construction across all scales. The continuing digitalization of design, fabrication, and construction suggests a changing investigation of architectural tectonics, identifying updated frameworks that define the contemporary role not only of structures and their details but of all processes and supply chains involved. What are the driving and formative forces behind tectonics? The impact of climate change adds further urgency to an evaluation of design approaches and outcomes, material use, forces at play, technology, and data involved. The concept of tectonics offered a valuable framework for linking craftsmanship and cultural narrative with constructive principles in architecture in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Initially based on a largely mechanical worldview, embedded in the principles of mass production and standardization of early industrialization, the discourse around tectonics expands in the twenty-first century to (re)consider the role of making and form, involving the impact of digital processes, advanced technologies, techniques, and media, examining new categories of materials, and addressing architecture through the lens of the Anthropocene.
