Lower establishment costs, retaining soil moisture and reduced impact on soil health are all reasons to consider a strip-till cultivation system for establishing sugar beet. The system produces a narrow, residue-free cultivated zone suitable for drilling the beet crop into, while leaving a significant area uncultivated. But get it wrong and it risks poorer establishment and lower yields."It's not as easy as just cultivating the whole field and drilling," says Suffolk grower Aaron Hogsbjerg, a director of the l,300ha contract farming business Griffin Farming.
