Nearly three decades ago, 19-year-old Donna Gebers walked into a Walnut Creek, Calif., dealership that sold Jaguar, Triumph and Renault and asked for a job. The store was called British Motors, so her thick English accent may have worked in her favor. She had recently moved with her family from England to the San Francisco area. Her father, a former British Leyland dealer in the United Kingdom, had taken a job selling Fords at a local dealership.
