After '09's dealer turmoil, NADA ponders road ahead

After a brutal 2009 in which more than 1,700 new-car dealerships went out of business, the National Automobile Dealers Association stands at a crossroads. Going into NADA's annual convention, which begins Saturday, Feb. 13, in Orlando, Fla., the organization's role is under scrutiny - by members and manufacturers. A bruising fight for arbitration rights by dealerships rejected by General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group cost NADA good will with both groups and caused friction among NADA's directors. GM mostly has pulled out of the convention, and some NADA members say they are quitting the organization.
