SEOUL - Hyundai Motor Co. is joining the hybrid mid-sized sedan segment with the next stage of hybrid technology, both in terms of battery power and in how that power is delivered to the wheels. The basics: The hybrid system on the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid mates a 2.4-liter engine running on an Atkinson cycle to a 30-kilowatt permanent-magnet motor. While some competitors use a continuously variable transmission, Hyundai chose to use a six-speed automatic transmission.
