The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a proposal to update the healthy definition for claims on products and packaging. The action is a part of the agency's commitment to reduce diet-related chronic disease and advance health equity. The updated claim is intended to act as a clear identifier to inform consumers, including those with less nutritional knowledge, and encourage developing healthier eating habits. The update is aligned with generally accepted nutrition science, administrative Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020 - 2025 advice, and Nutrition Facts label guidelines revised in 2016 for consuming more nutrient-dense foods that contribute to building diets consistent with current dietary recommendations. Under the revision, manufacturers must include more fruits, vegetables, dairy and whole grains in products while limiting saturated fat, sodium and added sugars to qualify for using the updated claim.
