In my early days as a GP trainee, I recall my trainer telling me that good GPs know a lot about a lot. This satisfyingly sliced through the 'jack of all trades, master of none' moniker that is sometimes applied to general practice by onlookers. It also instilled in me the idea of the expert generalist, always practising at the cutting edge. At the heart of this task for the modern GP is a commitment to the project of evidence-based medicine (EBM). The EBM movement, is undoubtedly, the foundation stone of modern medical usefulness and continues to deliver outcomes for patients on a grand scale.
