Sealing frits of any size can present some challenges. Very large frits sometimes require preheating and a rush to the annealing oven. With small frits, it can be difficult to seal the frit without losing too much surface area or closing off the porosity completely. Achieving a nice looking sealed frit with the maximum usable surface area is easier if the frit is just slightly smaller than the i.d. of the tubing into which it is being sealed. This sometimes necessitates grinding the frit down to a smaller size.
