The US Environmental Protection Agency April 28 issued an emergency fuel waiver to allow summertime sales of a gasoline blend containing 15 ethanol in a move the agency said would provide relief at the pump as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues to cause market supply issues.Without the waiver,a summertime halt in sales of that fuel across two-thirds of the country was imminent.May 1 marks the day terminal operators would have otherwise been barred from selling E15,while June 1 would have been the cutoff for retail stations in conventional gasoline markets. The renewable fuel lobby cheered the proactive step to combat potential fuel shortages and higher gasoline prices this summer, while the refining community balked at the move and questioned its legality.
