AROUND 10 PER CENT of UK CO2 emissions1 can be directly associated with construction activities-making it an industrial sector that rapidly needs to decarbonise to achieve the UK's goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.Cadent has also acknowledged this challenge and is working to introduce net zero construction sites from 20232.As the UK's largest gas distribution network, delivering natural gas to around 11 million homes,Cadent recognises the unprecedented level of change and investment required to decarbonise its wide range of assets and operations. In October last year,Cadent launched its 10 Point Hydrogen Plan, outlining an ambitious and long-term commitment to decarbonise as a business, while also creating more jobs. The first objective is to introduce net zero construction sites from 2023-a sector that is proving difficult to decarbonise given the carbon-intensive nature of various materials and the power requirements of heavy machinery.
