Have you been to East Kirkby, seen Just Jane or dropped by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) at Coningsby? Perhaps you've had a drink or two at the Petwood Hotel in Woodhall Spa and are looking for something a little different? How about heading north, across the Lincolnshire Wolds to the town of Grimsby? Known for its fishing industry, few people outside the local area are aware the town also had its own RAF station during World War Two. RAF Grimsby, located south of the town in Waltham, started life in 1933 as Grimsby Municipal Airport, but by 1940 it was under the control of the RAF and was renamed RAF Grimsby to avoid confusion with White Waltham in Surrey. Today, on concrete runways which once resounded to the thunder of Rolls-Royce Merlins, the only sound is the distant buzz of traffic on the nearby A16 and the occasional high-pitched whizz of electric motors, the station now an isolated mecca for local drone pilots, which has led to a number of drone videos of the airfield on YouTube.
