This species was described firstly as Sargassum sagamianum var. yezoense based on the specimen collected from Hokkaido Pref.,Japan in 1950 by Y. Yamada. Then, it was described as S. yezoense as a species independent of S. sagamianum due to morphological differences. This species is characterized by: 1)small discoid holdfast and the stem branches intricately and crawls on the rock; 2)main branch occurs from upper side of stem; 3)thallus length is 30-60 cm in many cases; 4)liner lanceolate leaves with dentate or smooth margin; 5)the shape of vesicle is spherical to ovate ana 6)dioecious receptacles have simple spatula shaped. This seaweed grows on the rocks that are hit hard by waves and is widely distributed on the Sea of Japan side.
