摘要

Dermatophytes are hyalin keratinophilic molds. According to their preferred hosts and ecological niches, they are classified in anthropophilic, zoophilic andgeophilic. This distinction is not always an easy one to make, especially when differentiating geophilic and zoophilic dermatophytes. Human contamination happens through contact with another person, with an animal, or via soil and fomites. The species identification of the dermatophyte responsible informs on the origin of the infection and on the necessary measures to be taken. Dermatophytes can be cosmopolitan or limited to certain regions. Globalization and the continuous evolution in life style make the epidemiology of these particular molds an extremely dynamic one. It varies according to the geographical, historical, social, religious and economical context, as well as the population studied and in time.
