The 2007 GTCbio meeting on deals and partnering in the anti-infective arena was a well-organized gathering of scientific, regulatory and commercial experts from pharmaceutical companies of various sizes, as well as experts from the investment community. As the pharmaceutical industry moves into 2007, there are several challenges to be met, including global shifts in the economic climate with new powerbases and diminishing contributions of previous customers, and a changing regulatory environment with new barriers to approval, leading to more costly and technically challenging clinical trials. The industry has already begun to address some of these issues, with major companies such as Pfizer Inc remodeling and restructuring their organization in order to meet challenges and maximize opportunities.
