The process of chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) domestication from wild red jungle-fowl (Gallus gallus) and the subsequent global distribution of chickens are unclear. Joris Peters, Ophelie Lebrasseur, et al. reassessed the domestic status of chicken remains from over 600 archaeological sites in 89 countries based on archaeological, iconographic, and textual data. The authors then correlated the distribution of chickens in the archaeological record with human societies and their subsistence strategies.
