I have recently fitted a tuned 1293cc engine with fast road cam and modified head into my Mini to replace a somewhat tired 998 unit. I am very pleased with the performance increase; so pleased, in fact, that I am a bit concerned about the performance of the braking system. The Mini is a 1988 model and has 8.4" front discs which are, I think, in reasonable condition. However, I do not feel that the brakes are adequate for the increased power. I am thinking eventually of fitting a set of alloy 4-pot calipers and new 8.4" discs. Would this make a noticeable improvement or is there something else I should be looking at? In the meantime, if possible, I would, like a cheaper fix to tide me over for the next year or so while I recover from the cost of the engine rebuild. The OE 8.4" servo disc brakes should perform well if they are maintained to a good standard. They were deemed adequate for the John Cooper Works Minis in the 1990s so it would certainly be worthwhile checking yours over and, if they are at all worn, then fitting some new, decent quality discs and pads such as EBC Greenstuff could be your stop-gap measure. I think you should also check the rear drums and replace the linings and wheel cylinders on both sides if needed - the rear brakes do not make a lot of difference but will help you to obtain a decent brake pedal and every little bit of extra stopping power will help.
