Introduction For almost a decade, the International AIDS Conference has gained a reputation as a gathering for activists, politicians, policymakers and patients who are seeking to raise AIDS awareness, particularly in poor and developing nations. The discussion of prevention services and the political science behind this issue, as well as the best approach for supplying treatment services, were the main points of debate at this year's event. Most presentations at the meeting, however, were science-based and primarily covered novel therapeutics in development The 2006 conference attracted approximately 26,000 participants, making it the largest meeting since the International AIDS series began in 1985.
