The present study investigates the effect of TIG welding on the mechanical properties of Inconel 600 alloy. Inconel 600 alloy was welded using TIG welding. Accordingly, the samples were prepared for characterization and testing. Samples were prepared for X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), microhardness testing and tensile testing. XRD analysis of the welded joint revealed the formation of different intermetallic compounds at the welded joints. These intermetallic joints improved the mechanical properties of the welded joints. Next, optical microscopy and SEM of the welded joints revealed minimal porosity at the welded joints. The lower porosity at the welded joints improved the mechanical properties of the welded joints. Microhardness analysis revealed that the hardness of the weld joint was higher than that of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) and was lower to the base Inconel 600 alloy. Further, the yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and elongation of the TIG welded Inconel 600 joints was higher than the base Inconel 600 alloy. The YS, UTS, and elongation of TIG welded Inconel joint was 9, 15 and 22 higher than the base Inconel 600 alloy respectively. Fracture analysis of the joints revealed a dimple type of structure indicating a ductile type of failure.
