EXXONMOBIL is forging ahead with a new exploration programme in the Stabroek block offshore Guyana to try to further increase its recoverable resource estimate of 10 billion barrels of oil equivalent in the prolific play. The fresh campaign takes place after the US major last week unlocked additional hydrocarbon volumes with the Fangtooth-1 and Lau Lau-1 discoveries at the block. ExxonMobil started on 10 January drilling of the Barreleye-1 well with the Noble Corporation drillship Noble Don Taylor, according to Guyana's Maritime Administration Department. Drilling is expected to last until 15 March, some 168 kilometres off the coast of Guyana. ExxonMobil recently used the Noble Don Taylor to spud Lau Lau-1, which encountered about 96 metres of high-quality hydrocarbon-bearing sandstone reservoirs some 68 kilometres southeast of the giant Liza field.
