Etia nguti, a new genus and species of cichlid fish from the River Mamfue, Upper Cross River basin in Cameroon, West-Central Africa

Etia nguti, new genus and species, is described from the Mamfue River, a tributary of the Upper River Cross River of Cameroon. Morphological analysis places the taxon within the African clade of cichlids, and its phylogenetic position among them is investigated using 1067 base pairs of DNA-sequences from three nuclear gene loci. Results of a preliminary analysis support the placement of Etia as the basal member of a large subclade consisting of E. nguti, the mouth brooding and substrate brooding tilapiines, Boulengerochromis microlepis, bathyba tines, lamprologines, and haplochromines. The monophyly of this grouping is corroborated by the derived possession of tricuspid teeth in the inner row of the oral dentition.
