Rail opens up SA iron

Mines and Energy South Australia is directly involved in an ambitious project to develop a pig-iron project using iron ore and coal resources that until now has not been economic. Just like the mines opened up in North America as the railroads pushed west in both the USA and Canada, the SA Steel and Energy project has been made potentially feasible by the construction in the late 1980s of the standard gauge heavy rail railroad between Alice Springs and Adelaide. Mines and Energy has a 20 percent stake in the project, along with Meekatharra Minerals (40 percent) and Ausmelt Ltd (40 percent).
