THE PANDEMIC has rationalisedthe Mexican airline industry,leaving it with two dynamicULCCs - Volaris and Viva Aerobus -and one full‐service carrier about toemerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy- Aeroméxico.Mexico shut down most of its domesticcapacity in April 2020 in responseto the first Covid‐19 wave,the US imposed severe restrictionson travel between the two countries,and other important trading partnerslike Argentina, Brazil, Colombia,Chile, and Canada completelyclosed their borders to internationaltravel. Overall, 2020 domestic trafficwas 50 down on 2019, internationaltraffic by almost 60. But marketshave been reopening since thespring of 2021, and last year trafficrebounded by 60 domestically and76 internationally, By the end of theyear traffic volumes were strongly upnot just on 2020 but also 2019.
