LCurrently, much of flsia, and especially East Rsia, is groujing at an impressive rate, though someuuhat looierthan before the East flsian crisis. Recording to world Bank (Ghosh 2006) estimates, the East flsian region has averaged 5.6 per cent a yearannual grooith during 2000-5,' China is groujing much faster This is allouuing for a very significant reduction in poverty. Continued high grooith is crucial from a perspective of poverty reduction, as the number of poor people in East flsia is a high proportion of the uuorld's poor Furthermore, continued dynamism in flsia is an increasingly important pillar for grotuth in the rest of the uuorld. Therefore, for both reasons, sustaining grooith in flsia is important for meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), as well as for sustaining uuorld economic grooith.
