Squalius orpheus, a new species of cyprinid fish from Evros drainage, Greece (Teleostei: Cyprinidae)

Squalius orpheus, new species, is described from the Evros drainage in Greece. It is distinguished by: a subtermi-nal mouth; 8Vz branched dorsal-fin rays; 8% branched anal-fin rays; 44-46 + 2 lateral line scales; depth of caudal peduncle 1.6-2.1 timesin its length; free margin of flank scales faintly marked, not much contrasted against rest of scale which is also pigmented, resulting in a very poorly contrasted reticulate pattern on flank; and dorsal and anal fins with dense black pigments on most membranes and hyaline rays in both sexes. Squalius cephalus has long been considered to be a species widely distributed throughout most of Europe from the Iberian Peninsula to the Urals. Several populations from southern Europe have been recognized as distinct species for a long time by some authors, but this diversity has often been negated, more by tradition than on the basis of facts. In recent years, molecular studies provided evidence that these southern populations (most of them earlier recognisedby morphology) constitute distinct lineages. The species inhabiting the drainages around the Aegean Sea are discussed by Stoumboudi et al. (2006). The purpose of the present article is to make a name available for a species from the Evros drainage.
