The 19th-century English art critic and philosopher, John Ruskin was credited with once writing: It is unwise to pay too much, but it is worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the things it was bought to do. Scholars today debate whether Ruskin actually wrote those words - he had been dead for ten years when they first appeared in print in 1910. Nonetheless, the sentiment is as true today as it was 100 years ago.
