First report of Phytophthora blight of celery (Apium graveolens var. dulce) caused by Phytophthora tentaculata in Japan
Abstract A new disease on celery discovered in Japan caused extreme stunting, dwarfed and yellowed leaves, black rot of the celery “heart”, and root rot. A filamentous microorganism was isolated from the affected plants and caused identical symptoms by 21 d after inoculation. Morphological and molecular characterization showed that the causal agent was Phytophthora tentaculata. Therefore, we propose “Phytophthora blight” as the name for the new disease. This report is the first on Phytophthora blight on celery caused by P. tentaculata in Japan.
