The genus Malthodes Kiesenwetter, 1852 on the four main Japanese islands is examined. Twenty-nine species and one subspecies belonging to five subgenera are recognized. Seven of these species are new: Malthodes (Hiranous) tsuchidai sp. nov.,M. (Maltharchus) takimotoanus sp. nov., M. (Sohayakimalthodes) enaensis sp. nov., M. (S.) kiriyamai sp. nov., M. (S.) komenonoanus sp. nov., M. (S.) sakauchiensis sp. nov., and M. {S) tanzawanus sp. nov. Three new subgenera are also described: Hiranous subgen. nov., Micromalthodes subgen. nov., and Sohayakimalthodes subgen. nov. Key to the species of Malthodes by subgenera is provided. Females of some species previously unknown females are described.
