If the goal of the September 11 terrorists was to inflict maximum damage on the American psyche as well as American economy, they could hardly have picked a better target than the twin towers of the World Trade Center (WTC).Not only were the two one-hundred-ten-story towers, plus the other smaller associated buildings, true architectural marvels, but inside their ten million square feet of office space, they housed an array of financial and governmental institutions unmatched in one location anywhere on earth and staffed by a work force of an estimated thirty-five thousand people on a normal working day-such as September 11.
