The FAPM submission to the Bracks Review of the Automotive Industry in 2008 and the Bracks final report discussed the fragmented nature of the Australian automotive supply chain. From the OEM supply chain perspective, there are over 200 companies manufacturing automotive components in Australia. Bracks reported to Government that there were many small firms operating within the industry, and that such fragmentation did not produce sufficient scale to be globally competitive. Smaller firms were unable to access global technologies - unlike their Tier 1 counterparts -and lacked the necessary management and manufacturing quality skills.
