As an ex-navy nuke having participated in two overhauls and refuels, as well as taking four patrols on a ballistic missile submarine, I started early in nuclear power. From July 1971 through April 1977, I worked at Industrial Reactor Laboratories in Plainsboro, N.J. As I and a colleague participated in rewriting the facility information manual, as well as the operating procedures manual, in preparation for obtaining reactor operator licenses, we interfaced with the total scope and capabilities of the facility. This 5-MWt swimming pool test reactor was constructed under President Eisenhower's Atoms for Peace program by 12 companies, with the purpose of exploring the use of processing and generating radioactive materials and their applications.
