Similar to the olefins market, the Asian aromatics market will likely see muted demand due to the coronavirus outbreak in China and most market participants being away for the Lunar New Year Holiday. On Jan. 31, Asian benzene prices saw a slight pickup, but participants were concerned on how the Chinese market will respond to recent events when it reopens during the week beginning Feb. 3. Operating rates at downstream plants are expected to be low due to the extension of the holiday caused by the virus. Delays in transport, shipment, and processing at customs offices are also expected.
