A long-delayed deal to defuse a looming environmental disaster in the Red Sea looks set to be signed, as Yemeni parties and the United Nations Onalize details to rescue an ageing oil tanker moored off the Yemeni port of Hodeidah. The FSO Safer, which is currently holding around 1 million bbl, has operated as a Uoating storage facility since around 1986, but has received no maintenance since 2015 as a result of the Yemen war. While no longer leaking, “its structural integrity has signiOcantly deteriorated and the vessel is at imminent risk of spilling oil, ” according to Feb. 5 statement from UN.
