Hydrogen reacts with most other elements in the periodic table to form compounds with diverse compositions, structures, and properties. Complex transition metal hydrides (CTMHs) are a unique class of materials which approach multifunctionality, in particular within the energy storage and conversion fields. This perspective gives a brief introduction to the CTMHs as well as their potential properties and applications, and the emerging research trend of utilizing CTMHs in heterogeneous catalysis is highlighted by showing representative case studies.
