After laser remelting (LR) of magnesium alloys by different processes, a simple hydrothermal method was applied to prepare Mg/Al-layered double hydroxide films (LDHs) on them to improve their corrosion resistance. The results show that LR/LDH can effectively improve the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys. Comparing to that of the bare AZ31 Mg alloy, the corrosion current density of the AZ31-LR/LDH was decreased by 4 orders of magnitude. LR makes the distribution of LDH more uniform and dense, the physical protection of LR layer and adsorption of Cl- by LDHs inhibit the corrosion of AZ31 alloy.
