Windshield Assembly with an Abraded Surface and/or Holes through the ply's

The present invention describes a windshield assembly in a vehicle which has holes in the inner ply and/or outer ply near the bottom area. The windshield assembly may also have an abraded surface on the inner ply and/or outer ply. The abraded surface may be produced by a mechanical or chemical process. The windshield assembly may also have targeted areas with score marks or scribe lines in combination with any of the above mentioned treatments. The size and quantity of the holes and the abraded area will be dependent on each specific windshield size and shape. The pattern of the abraded area and the pattern of holes arc also dependent on the specific vehicle application. Constructing a vehicle windshield in this manner adds intentional flaws that will act as stress risers, causing crack initiation to occur faster upon an impact. This may be beneficial for pedestrian protection.
