The previous ECO_2L tool was the world's first calculation and auditing model to determine the energy efficiency and CO_2 emissions of a tannery at its site. Since its introduction in 2012, a large number of companies have gained an overview of how energy efficient they already are and where there is still room for improvement. Currently, more than 25 tanneries, representing 13 countries ranging from those in Europe to China, Uruguay and Indonesia (amongst others) successfully perform to the requirements of the auditing regime and proudly display the certificate of achievement. Today, CO_2 product assessment is becoming increasingly important within the entire production and supply chains, as well as a discussion point between customers and end consumers, certainly when it comes to comparative assessments with other materials. A standardised determination of a company's CO_2 emissions, associated with leather production, is also demanded by customers and can be seen as a tool that helps to make one's own efforts in sustainable production visible.
