A team at the Madrid based University of Carlos III has successfully developed an experimental bench test system to evaluate the performance of hybrid power trains. The bench is suitable for testing power trains for both transportation and stationary applications. Such flexibility was achieved by using a simulated fuel cell and load, and real battery or other energy storage device, such as super capacitors. Most experimental test benches are designed to work with a specific power train, which usually requires less flexible, high cost hardware. This team simulated part of the test bench to achieve lower costs and greater flexibility.
