The standard test methods for octane number were developed in the 1920s and 1930s by the Co-operative Fuel Research (CFR) committee in the United States. These test methods used a standardised, variable compression ratio CFR engine, which provided a link between laboratory based fuel ratings and the full range of operating conditions that were likely to be encountered in a vehicle. At this time, the octane number tests were so pioneering that it took a further two decades for the test methods to be formally recognised by the American Society for Testing and Materials (today ASTM International).
