Folie à deux mixed dissociative disorder - A case report

Transmission of symptoms resulting in concurrent appearance of them among the persons who are either close to each other or members of a same family living together is coined as "Folie a deux" (Lasegue and Falret, 1877). This phenomenon is further divided into 'Folie Imposee' (imposed), 'Folie Simultanee' (simultaneous), 'Folie Communique' (communicated) and 'Folie Indiute' (induced) subtypes (Sims, 1995). Folie a deux phenomenon in dissociative disorders is rare. However, dissociative hyperventila-tion (Kusakabe and Kusakabe, 1979), trance and possession disorder (Kiraly, 1975) and dissociative amnesia (Chapman and Vieira e silva, 1998) have been reported. Chapman and Vieira e silva (1998) reported folie a deux dissociative amnesia in an 8 and 12 year-old sister-brother pair.In this report, we present a case of two brothers aged 10 and 8 years who presented with simultaneous dissociative phenomena.
