Advances in signal processing techniques have played a significant role in increasing the areal recording density of the hard disk drive (HDD). In this paper, we outline the history of signal processing techniques and error correction methods for HDDs. Then, we explain a read/write channel model and signal processing for shingled magnetic recording (SMR) and microwave assisted magnetic recording (MAMR). Furthermore, we also explain signal processing for three-dimensional magnetic recording using magnetic resonance reading with a spintorque oscillator (STO).
